Instructional leadership is one of the most important aspects of what administrators provide to their staff and community at large. Instruction is at the core of what schools provide to students on a daily basis and a leader’s ability to lead their staff through this complex topic is vital to the success of any administrator. What instructional leadership means is an incredibly broad topic that encompasses a wide variety of topics such as instructional walkthroughs, curriculum, instruction, assessment systems, professional development, and much more.
Though my observations and shadowing, I was able to understand how multifaceted this topic was and the importance of taking it one step at a time. Zero in on small but important issues and attack them a step at a time while still keeping the 30,000 foot view in mind. In one particular assignment, we were asked to review data around a student achievement issue and analyze its cause as well as suggest possible remedies. The assignment was a great way to understand how to break down larger issues into more management pieces to begin to effect change. To continue to grow in this area, it will be important to remain involved in committees such as our Site Wide Literacy team and continue to help my department as they navigate recent shifts in instructional expectations.
