Hello All: As you know, I am out today on a field trip to San Francisco with a group of students from other classes. While I am gone, you have a number of things to do! Below is a list of your assignments that MUST get done today. I will be looking at the time stamp on your notations to see if you completed the assignment in class or later. Full credit will only go to those who complete the assignment on time.
Homework: GOOD NEWS FOR YOU – there will be no extra reading tonight! In fact, you have no English homework tonight. I want to make sure we discuss Part 1, before we move to part 2.

Time to get started on those research paper rough drafts! Remember what I told you, you should be pacing at about 1-1.5 paragraphs a day to get your rough draft of your research paper done by Friday, when it is due! Use your outline to help guide you.
Here is the schedule of what you should be writing each day:
Tuesday: Background Paragraph 1 and 2
Wednesday: Solutions Paragraph 1
Thursday: Solutions Paragraph 2
Friday: Counter Claim Paragraph
Please remember that I WILL BE CHECKING THIS WRITNG ON MONDAY! This is 50 POINTS worth of work, which as you know in this class is a lot!
Also remember that this is a lot of work time in class and that you should use your time wisely. No phones. No games. No distractions. Try your hardest to focus and get this done!
1. Free Write (20 Minutes): You know the drill - create a page in your free write tab with today's date as the title. Write 2 paragraphs about ANYTHING you want. Need ideas? Tell me about your spring break, or, tell me what you're looking forward to in Semester 2.
2. Mass Shootings - What I know: Create a page in your "Research Paper" tab of OneNote and entitle it "Mass Shootings - What I know." In the tab, I want you to write down as much as you know about mass shootings. Your writing should answer the following questions:
What is a Mass Shooting?
What mass shootings have you heard most about?
How do you feel about mass shootings?
Why do you think people commit these acts?
What do you think we should do about them as a society?
Most of the questions are opinion question so everyone should be able to write things!
3. Read and Annotate: In the content library, there is an article entitled: "What Makes A "Mass Shooting" in America." Copy this article to your "Research Paper" tab and read it. Once you've read it, go back through it an highlight/annotate any information that helps you to define what a mass shooting is. Once you complete that, at the bottom of the article, write three questions that you still have after reading the article? These questions can include things you just want to know more about.
Journal 1: In the article “The Fifties” it stated, “The era following World War II in the United States was known for its productivity, its affluence, and its social conformity.” Do you think much has changed since then, or is our culture still known for these things?
Journal 2: In the pages we read last night, it says “ ‘There is dew on the grass in the morning.’ He suddenly couldn’t remember if he knew this or not…”
In F451, technology and entertainment rule all. Because of this, people often miss “the small thing.” Do you feel like people today miss “the small things as well?” if you don’t, what are some of the small things you’ve noticed lately?
Journal 3: Bradbury opens the novel with a quote from Juan Ramón Jiménez: “If they give you ruled paper, write the other way.” Why did Bradbury select this statement, and what does it mean?
Journal 4: Montag has an incredibly contentious relationship with “The Mechanical Hound.” When he enters the firehouse, he seems almost scared of the hound. Why does Bradbury include this scene? What do you think these scene is foreshadowing or symbolic of?
Journal 5: You are about to take a quiz on the first 40 pages of F451. Write a 1 paragraph summary of the book thus far. Be concise and think of important details around events in the book and Montag’s VLAMIF character analysis.
Journal 6: In the scene you just finished reading, an old woman decided to burn herself alive with her books instead of going with firemen. Why do you think that she chose to do that? Remember, you answer should be a minimum of 1 paragraph (that is the bare min. and the bare min. gets you a C).
Journal 7: In the scene you just finished reading, Beatty explained to Montag how the world came to be in the state it is in where no one reads or discusses anything of substance. With technology, we are quickly becoming the mass society that Beatty describes in real life. How to we ensure that in our society we hear people’s concerns, but do not fall into the “ultra PC” society that Beatty describes in which we oversimplify things to the point where people no longer care? Remember, you answer should be a minimum of 1 paragraph (that is the bare min. and the bare min. gets you a C).
Journal 8: “He pressed at the pain in his eyes and suddenly the odor of kerosene made him vomit.” (49)
This particular line in the book signals a big change in Montag. What do you think that change is? Why does this change happen at this point in the book? Cite evidence from the book and provide at least one quote (which does not count towards the 1 paragraph minimum length of your writing).
Journal 9: Write about one or the other:
What do you find most interesting about the book so far and why?
Why do you not like the book.
Either way, provide evidence from the book as to why you think the way you do.
Journal 10: What does Beatty’s speech about Clarisse reveal about him—why does he speak about her so passionately?
Please read EVERYTHING carefully. You have a lot to get done today:
A note on Journals: I will be collecting them tomorrow (March 13). By the end of the day today, you will have 10 entries! You are responsible for finding any missing entries you have. I know many of you were missing #5 so I re-posted it below this post.
1. Reading (30 minutes): You will start the period by reading silently for 30 minutes. You need to read to page 1113-129 of your F451 book. We will finish the book this week!
2. Journal Entry #10 (Should be done in your journal) (20 minutes): What does Beatty’s speech about Clarisse reveal about him—why does he speak about her so passionately?
3. Article Annotation (30 minutes): This Friday, you will be writing another in-class essay about Censorship. Below is the writing task you will complete on Friday:
Since America’s inception, the idea of what should be censored and what should not be censored has been hotly debated. Throughout history, people have sought to censor books, music, and film. With the rise of the internet, social media, the ease of access to adult material, and the medaling of foreign nations in our last presidential election, people are trying to decide if we should in someway be censoring the internet. Some believe that we must “protect children” and protect our nation from those that “seek to destroy it” while others believe that any type of censorship violates our basic rights to free speech and our freedoms in general.
Write an essay taking a stance on this issue. Be sure to cite evidence from at least two of the texts we have read this unit as well as any outside research you have done or your own personal experience.
Today, you will be reading the first article that you can draw from when constructing your argument on Friday. The article is entitled "What Children Need is Censorship." Read the article. When you read it, clearly annotate the article for the following information:
A. Highlight or underline the Thesis of the author.
B. Highlight in a different color or box in any claims the author makes to try and prove his thesis.
D. Highlight in a 3rd color or bracket in [these are brackets] the evidence he gives to support his claims.
E. In the margins, write your thoughts on his claims. Do you agree, or do you disagree and why.
Doing this work will earn you points toward the essay and will be valuable in helping to formulate your article on Friday.
many of you are missing journal entry 5 and have asked for it. Here it is again:
